 Voice communications are typically thought to consume very little bandwidth on a network link. However, this is certainly not the case. A typical phone call consumes 64 kbps of bandwidth and while that may not seem like much, it adds up quick. If you have 4 phones all going at once, you're now up to 256 kbps and that is in both directions.
While your downlink may be very fast, Internet Service Providers (ISP) often limit your uplink significantly. A standard DSL connection often only has a maximum of 256 kbps uplink which would just be enough for 4 phone calls if there is no other traffic on the network such as web browsing. Satellite connections typically provide even less uplink bandwidth and the little they do provide is very expensive.
